Torch Relay and Tough Ride

My friend Shon called a ride from John A Logan College today.  It was to be a 60ish miles and head towards the hills around Giant City.  It took me a long time to decide to go, I need to get in hard rides, but my desire to get in hard rides is low.  I eventually decided I would regret it all day if I didn’t go.  It was a great route and I really enjoyed it.

On the way there I was delayed by none other than bike riders, riders under police escort carrying a torch across America for the Relay for Life.  When I figured out what was slowing traffic to a car I just found the closest parking spot and rode a few miles passing the torch barer entourage.

It wasn’t brutally hot today but it was hot, my Garmin said it was 96 but it actually was around 91, still humidity was high and my body was working extra hard to stay cool.  I suffered up some of the longer climbs.  Shon is in excellent shape and seemed to glide, he never showed a bit of weakness in this ride.

That is good stuff. Sounds like much more fun than riding my office chair all day. Are you guys planning on doing the Superman Ride this saturday? I may do it, but don’t like gutting myself on true road rides. I like the pain that gravel rides dishes out a little better. I invited an endurance racer guy down for a gravel ride Saturday. He is in STL for the week and looking for places to ride. I told him if he can’t find anything local, I would do a gravel ride with him. I’m guessing he will find something closer to STL, but if not, the Dirty West Side loop may be what I ride Saturday.

Yeah was great fun, as always I’m working Saturday, but Shon would probably be interested in a gravel ride.
