Sometimes I forget that not everyone who stumbles across this blog is as “ate up” with bikes as I am, so lets roll things back a bit here.  GP Sven Nys is a Cyclocross race in Baal Belgium.  Cyclocross is a type of bike racing that involves loops on a short track composed of grass, mud, sand, dirt, and asphalt.  Pretty much everyone in Belgium goes to these races.  It’s hard to overstate just how popular cyclocross racing is there, think like football in Texas

So the race GP Sven Nys is named after Sven Nys, who is the greatest cyclocross rider of all time.  It’s impossible to overstate just how popular Sven Nys is in Belgium.  It’s also impossible to overstate just how good Nys is at cyclocross.  I’ve seen Nys blow a start and wind up in the back of a 50 man field and work his way back to the front, but far more often I’ve watched him just ride smoother, faster, and more powerfully then everyone else in the race.  He’ll often finish far in front of his closest chaser, as he did at his namesake race this year.

If you look closely Nys is racing with disc brakes, the only rider on the front row with discs.

For 15 years Nys has been riding a Cologno, but for the new year he’s signed with Trek.  This was a brilliant move for both Trek and Nys.  Cyclocross is poised to really take off in the US.  It’s the fastest growing bike sport in America already and not only is it great for racers, its also great for spectators.

American Champion Jonathon Page rarely gets much TV time in the Belgium races. After the first lap you generally just watch Nys and the few people chasing him.

Nys is nearing the end of his career and even though he’s still winning races he wants more.  He wants to see Cyclocross grow, especially in the US.  I’m sure that Trek dished out big money to get Nys on their bike, but it appears that Nys wanted an international sponsor and wants to cement his legend as not only greatest cyclocross rider of all time, but the ambassador that brought cyclocross to the world.

Nys kissing his new Trek, easily winning his first race on it. It can't get any better for Trek.
