The Black Friday ride is one of my favorite rides of the year because it brings out riders who I sometimes only get to ride with once a year. Some notable folks were missing this year but we still had a great turn out with 15 riders I think. The ride was at Frank’s Tract which is some sweet benchcut trails; fast flowy and fun.
Ed got us underway and we blasted onto the benchcut, we were joined by old school East Side rider Drew who had to do a shorter version of the ride due to work. Eli kept the pace civil but we had a great group and everyone stayed together very well. The Black Friday ride has always traditionally been a big get together and often a had a very diverse mix of riders. I remember one from a few years ago where the return trip looked like beaten soldiers returning from war. Today we were the victors.
I was back on the Dos Niner, which is just the absolute best mountain bike ever. I ride this bike so well, I dread the day when the frame finally fails. The Dos had been down a for a few weeks after I ripped the derailleur hanger off a few weeks ago. I bent the derailleur back straight and replaced the hanger and it was working perfectly this morning. Of course about halfway through the ride I picked up a stick which jammed the derailleur and pulled it apart. Justin and Dave helped me find the parts, which was a miracle in itself, and then helped me fix the derailleur enough to finish the ride. Dave had a zip tie and was a master of separating a master link. I didn’t have every gear working but I had enough.
We suffered one other broken hanger but the rider was smart enough to carry spare hangers and the bike was up and running in ten minutes. There were no flats and no crashes, which makes it a very successful ride to me. One rider had a seriously bent rim, but it didn’t stop him from finishing the ride. Another fine Black Friday Ride, and to think we could have been standing in line for hours so we could fight people for the privilege of buying a TV.
