This time last year it hadn’t rained in over a month, I didn’t mow my yard for a month, the fireworks were canceled due drought, and it was 90+ degrees every day.
This summer its like we’re living in a different climate zone. The highs have been barely getting into the 80s, it rains all the time and the mornings are downright cool. I rode with my Mom yesterday morning and wore arm warmers, she wore a jacket. We rode over an hour before removing the cool weather gear. Got to admit, its pretty awesome. We did some exploring of roads that I had never been on and had to reroute a few times for gravel and one bridge.
It’s July so of course I’ve been watching the Tour, I bought the NBC sports web package, I can’t help myself. Thing is that its really an amazing deal. 3-4 hours a day of coverage, live or replay zero commercials, its like 35 cents per hour. More importantly the television broadcast that I’ve attempted to watch on NBC sports seems to show more commercials than race coverage.
I experienced a bizarre juxtaposition yesterday while Shauna and I ate at a restuarant. It seems that all restaurants have a dozen or so 50 inch TVs everywhere. In the area where we set I had a clear view of 2 screens, one was showing the Tour the other was showing an International Hot Dog Eating Contest. It was making my head spin, one of the greatest events in the world right beside one of the most inane events in the world.
In Tour Divide news Luke rode all through the night and finished this morning I think he rode like 250 miles in the last 24 hours. I’m looking forward to the full story of his ride and relating it on the blog!
Planning on riding my first century of the year tomorrow.
